Tasting notes
Only produced in large format bottles (magnums and double magnums), the 2012 Il Caberlot is an abundantly fragrant and intense red wine with a beautiful sense of balance and integrity. The name of the grape clone used is Caberlot and Il Carnasciale has built its cult reputation on the fact that only they seem to grow it. The wine offers an inky and impenetrable appearance with an impressive sense of depth and purity. The bouquet is perhaps more reminiscent of Cabernet with dark fruit, spice, moist earth and violets. You get a delicate touch of freshly milled white pepper as well. Some 3,450 magnums were produced and only 120 double magnums were made. This wine can be very challenging to locate.

The flagship 2012 Il Caberlot is all class. Rose petal, sweet red plum, flowers of all kinds, mint and herbs open up first in the bouquet. Like so many wines in this vintage, the 2012 is a bit light on the palate, with good depth, but less of the resonance that is typical. It will be interesting to see if the 2012 gains a bit more depth in bottle. As always, Il Caberlot is bottled only in magnum.
