The 2007 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru displays modest bricking on the rim. It's quite savory and ferrous on the nose, with hints of tomato vine marrying nicely with airy red fruit aromas intermixed with allspice. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly powdery tannins, deft touches of Moroccan spice woven into the mixture of red and black fruit and a beguiling sense of Pinoté on the elegant finish. At its peak now, this is irresistible.

(vinified with 20% whole clusters) Good medium red. Red and black fruits lifted by a note of violet on the nose; I might have picked this as coming from Chambolle except for its smoky minerality. Then sweet but tight on the palate, with dark flavors of cassis, black raspberry and pepper complicated by Richebourg-like soil tones of smoke and minerals. This is rather backward and in need of at least three or four years of cellaring. Incidentally, the pH here is a very moderate 3.49.

Joseph Drouhin is one of the largest and most famous producers in Burgundy, making both domaine and négociant wines. It remains family-owned and run, now in the hands of the fourth generation.
