Tasting notes
The 2016 Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Auslese * (AP 22 17) offers a deep, pure, cool and smoky bouquet of ripe and concentrated Riesling fruits along with crunchy slate plates. Silky, round and lush on the palate, with very fine tannins and lingering salinity, this is a gorgeously fine and salty Riesling with structure, finesse and tensioned length. Extremely stimulating and fine, with weathering slate on the palate. Pure and salty, just gorgeous.

This “one-star” bottling was in a class by itself among the Selbachs’ 2015 vintage Auslesen, and the 2016 installment is not too far behind. Also like that 2015, this leads tropically with mango and glazed pineapple. Prickly notes of ginger and lemon peel point toward the presence of botrytis, as do the suggestions of pear and quince preserves that mingle with the tropical fruits on a glycerol-rich, expansive palate. The long, luscious finish surprises with its focus, brightness, tang and transparency to smoky, stony nuances. This has serious cellar potential.
