Magnum. After all those subtle relics from Bordeaux, it was inevitable that this powerful young Californian would seem a bit brash and sweet. This is a famous vineyard and there's a hint of mint. I didn't check the alcohol level but am pretty certain it was high. (JR)

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is dark, plump and juicy, with plenty of near and medium term appeal. Silky, soft and open-knit, the 2012 Dr. Crane is a good example of the year. Drink this supple, juicy Cabernet Sauvignon over the next handful of years. In 2012, the 100% new French oak is evident, one of the clues the vintage is slightly lacking in concentration.
Same alcohol as the 2011 but a very different palate and nose impression. Back to the super-sweet cocoa-powder model. Rather drying on the end. Not there yet but much more part of the family than the 2011. (JR)

Paul Hobbs is one of California wine’s biggest names. Twice named Wine Personality of the Year by Robert Parker, he joined Robert Mondavi in 1977, worked at Opus One and Simi before setting up his eponymous winery in 1991.
