A perfect example of the magic of First Growths, even when they were Second Growths at the time, as this vintage was three years before Mouton was promoted. I bought this wine at auction for around €200, and it was a gamble as to its condition as the label was pretty much non-existent, but the risk more than paid off. Shared with dear friends at one of my favourite restaurants in Bordeaux (Ressources), this was mouthwatering, moreish, delicate but never wavering, fine tannins, brambled fruit, a shot of incense, liqourice, graphite, fully in its drinking window but not yet flagging. Wonderful.

From two bottles bought by David Hunter at swashbuckling retailer Augustus Barnett after the oil crash of the early 1970s for £3.99 a bottle. Of course Mouton was a mere second growth when this was made! Perhaps this examples certain taste similarities with fellow second growth Léoville Barton 1976. The fruit is receding and there is not a great deal of charm left. A hint of meatiness but none of Mouton's appealing spiciness and concentration. Drink up. (JR)

Shiny, russet colour. Muted, simple nose. Rich fruit with a dry finish. Surely Bordeaux? Not exciting but appetising. Well balanced and still motoring along. Neat finish. (JR)
