A great classic, sandalwood, cedar, plenty of firm tannins on display, this is a vintage that can be pretty sombre, and it is still clear that this was a tannic wine in its youth. Raspberry, red cherry, cherry pit, blueberry, just a touch drying on the very finish but overall this is walking the line, with tobacco and saffron, excellent quality and beginning to enter its sweet spot for drinking. 70% new oak for ageing, Michel Raoul technical director, Eric Boissenot consultant.

The 2000 Langoa-Barton is quite upfront on the nose, delivering lush black fruit, menthol, boysenberry and cedar, opulent for the vintage and quite precocious. The palate is lightly spiced and very cohesive, with saturated tannins and fine acidity, quite backward for a 2000 and less rustic than some of the millennials. It lacks a little complexity and mineralité on the finish and fades a bit in the glass.

Mid to deep crimson with a hint of blue, still. High toned, scented but obviously very dry. No-compromises bordeaux. This is not trying to get a score. This is just how it came out that year. Bone dry and still work in progress with quite marked tannins still. (JR)
