Magnum. Meaty, rich, a little musty perhaps. Rich, powerful, fruit-driven on the palate, with polenta-like tannic texture. Finishes with a sour note on the finish. (RH)

A brilliant Troplong, served out of magnum, juicy, confident, with the depth of flavour and concentration that you find so often with this estate, rippling through with blackberry, cocoa bean and smoked vanilla, tapering off to soft charcoal and smoked earth. Well balanced at this stage, extremely moreish, less overpowering than some vintages of Troplong around these years. No need to wait to drink this, at a great moment for showing its full expression. 100% new oak.

Briary and blackberry on the nose, plenty of spice, appealing dark fruit on the palate. Fresh tannins, distinctly lighter in character than 1998. Appealing and drinkable, but ready to drink up. (AWH)

The 1999 Troplong Mondot has a fresh bouquet of black currant, lavender, juniper berry and light floral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin and good body but not much complexity. Moderate in terms of freshness, this feels as if it has reached full maturity. The rather rustic, “big-boned” finish delivers grip, if not quite enough flesh. Fine. Tasted from an ex- château bottle at the estate.
