Score 91/100 · Drink 2003-2013, Robert Parker, Dec 2003

The opaque purple-colored 2001 Pinot Noir Moonshine Ranch exhibits tremendous fruit as well as density, but it remains closed and backward. A brooding, thick, rich, intense Pinot, it could easily be mistaken for a Rhone Valley Cote Rotie given its floral notes and tremendously intense concentration. Tel. (15.4% alcohol) Deep, saturated medium ruby. Dusty aromas of black cherry, black raspberry and pepper. Rich, sweet, full and sappy; really stuffed with cassis, black cherry and pepper flavors. A dense, fat, rather brawny style of pinot, but with plenty of inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes long, with dusty, building tannins.

About the producer

martinelli
Martinelli

Martinelli is a Sonoma benchmark for vineyard-designate bottlings—wines built to highlight how strongly a single site can shape Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Zinfandel. Across the range, the focus stays consistent: small-production bottlings that feel distinctly tied to where they’re grown.
