Score 95/100 · Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2004

(from a vineyard planted in 1885 and owned by ex-commissioner of baseball Peter Ueberroth; this is 16.4% alcohol with a low pH of 3.25) Bright ruby-red. Explosive, musky nose combines cherry, blackberry, cassis, minerals, roasted herbs, spice cake and licorice. Hugely dense and sweet, with exceptional depth of flavor. Boasts outstanding stuffing and a marvelously long, sweet aftertaste. Based on this first vintage, this vineyard should produce zinfandel in the same quality league as Hayne Vineyard, at least in the riper years. (ST)

A debut effort is the 500-case 2002 Zinfandel Ueberroth Vineyard, a limestone vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles planted in 1885. Yes, for those who are wondering, this is the former commissioner of major league baseball. This stunning Zinfandel comes across like a full-throttle Chateauneuf du Pape. Kirsch liqueur, pepper, and garrigue/Provencal herb-like notes cascade from the glass of this full-bodied, heady red (500 cases; 16.4% alcohol). Amazingly rich, with a velvety, unctuous texture, enormous thickness yet surprising elegance as well as delineation, it is the result of exceptional winemaking and old vines ... a marvelous combination. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years. NOTE: This is an estimated price per bottle. Tel. (707) 963-0940; Fax (707) 963-8683
