2019 Sierra Foothills Sumu Kaw Vineyard Syrah

Made from fruit grown on volcanic loam at 3,000 ft of elevation. Foot-crushed and fermented in open-top fermenters for 10 days, then free-run juice only was drained to a combination of tank and puncheons for ageing. Racked twice before being bottled unfiltered and unfined. Closed with a screwcap. 153 cases made. Smells of bloody meat, flowers and wet stone. Saline flavours of blackberry, black cherry, black olive and fresh blackcurrants have a wonderful bright acidity and stony minerality. Almost no tannins to speak of – just a gauzy whisper of texture as the wine finishes with a hint of citrus peel. (AY)
