Score 95/100 · Drink 2029-2048, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate, May 2026

Sorrel’s 2023 Hermitage was crafted from vines planted in the lieux-dits Les Bessards and Les Plantiers on granite soils. Vinified with 100% whole bunches and matured for 18 months, it was neither fined nor filtered. Despite being the most reductive wine in the cellar, it wafts from the glass with aromas of lilac, violet, pepper, dark berries and cassis mingled with licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it’s built around a seamless core of fruit supported by vibrant acidity. It has a tensile profile derived from whole clusters and is framed by velvety and fresh tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal finish. This is an exquisite wine that should age gracefully over the next two decades and beyond.

The complex 2023 Hermitage begins its sensory story with pronounced violets, graphite dust, black cherry, fleshy tones and peppery gradations. Medium to full-bodied and built around sleek tannins, the 2023 is a thrilling Hermitage from the talented Guillaume Sorrel. There’s real finesse and precision on the highly elegant finish.

Markedly floral, the enticing 2023 Hermitage emerges with perfumed orange blossom, rose petal and fresh violet scents. Ripe black cherry, red plum and cedar notes add more complexity. Built around finely sculpted tannins, the 2023 hits the medium- to full-bodied palate with remarkable freshness, clocking out with persistence on the detailed finish.

90% Marsanne, 10% Roussanne. 60-year-old vines in Les Greffieux and Les Plantiers. Aged 20 months in oak. Cask sample. Apple and pear notes. Attractive fruit and silky texture combined with a redoubtable freshness. Beautifully balanced. Appealing now, but better to wait. (JL)
