Tasting notes
Bottle weight 407 g. 90% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano. Hand-harvested. The Tempranillo from 50-year-old vines planted on clay-limestone soils in Rioja Alavesa. 21 months in American oak. Winemaker Francisco Hurtado de Amezaga. Vegan. RS 1.9 g/l. 364 stores. Still very deep crimson considering the length of oak ageing. Pure, soaring, vanilla nose and already approachable but with lots of potential for further complexity. Wish I’d tasted this before writing my Iberian cellar article ! VGV (JR)

The 2019 Reserva is a blend of 94% Tempranillo and 6% Graciano, sourced from a vineyard planted in 1970 in Rioja Alavesa. This dark purple wine unfurls with aromas of dried plums and balsamic over an oaky layer. Dry and rich on the palate, the firm tannins are enlivened by an ethereal mouthfeel—a warm, flavorful and overwhelming wine.
90% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano. 21 months in classic American oak barrels. Vegan. Deep crimson. Fresh nose (quite a contrast to the Esprit de l’Église ‘Rioja’ I have just tasted). Really great combination of classic Tempranillo (tobacco leaf?) fruit and structure. Only just ready to drink and it should carry on developing for many a year. Great stuff! (JR)
