The 2015 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a powerful, intense bouquet of well-defined layers of black rather than red fruit, infused with flint and smoke and showing some stem addition. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and very well judged acidity; it is backward at the moment, but so focused and persistent that it will surely mature into an extremely fine Grand Cru. God invented wine so he could drink this (probably). Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Tasted blind, Christophe Roumier's 2015 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru was especially impressive, unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet wild berries, dried roses, raw cocoa and espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with wonderful depth, dimension and concentration, underpinned by a lovely line of acidity. The combination of amplitude, power and vibrancy make this very special indeed. I won't touch any of my bottles for a decade and would counsel readers to do the same.

(13.6% alcohol; 48% vendange entier ): Good medium red. Alluring scents of black raspberry, leather and musky game. Sappy, savory and deep, conveying a compelling subtle sweetness to the very concentrated flavors of blackberry, blueberry, mocha and game. A step above the Charmes-Chambertin in density and refinement--and with more stuffing to buffer its substantial but fully ripe tannins. Very long on the finish, with an element of energy that belies its very low acidity (2.8 grams per liter). Superb.
