Tasting notes
The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Pian di Conte impresses for the seamless presentation it offers. Blackberry and dark cherry nuances segue to spice, leather and tobacco. The bouquet makes these jumps with effortless transitions and it builds important momentum that adds to the wine's length and persistence. Compared to the 2010 Annata, this 2010 Riserva is slightly bolder and heavier.

A big, structured wine, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Pian di Conte is going to need at least a few years to unwind. Big, strapping tannins provide the framework for a wine endowed with considerable depth. Dark cherry, plum, menthol, incense, earthiness and savory herbs gradually unfurl, but the best is yet to come.
Tasted blind. Deep ruby with orange tinges. Tight and malty nose that is hinting at oak. Very closed on the palate too. Acidity plays the lead role at the moment, while the fruit is very slow to emerge on the finish. Slow burner? (WS)
