The 1999 Barolo Cascina Francia is fascinating to taste next to the 2007, as it is clearly a wine from the Giovanni Conterno era. Heady and imposing, the 1999 is super classic all the way. Shades of iron, tobacco, incense, leather and orange peel add to its old-school feel. Even after all these years, the tannins remain quite formidable, as I imagine they always will.

Conterno's 1999 Cascina Francia graces the palate with extraordinary depth and resonance. Sweet floral notes wrap around a core of super-expressive red stone fruits as the wine opens up in the glass. Over the last few years the 1999 has continued to put on weight. Today, it is a much more extroverted and generous wine than it was at the outset. The 1999 can be enjoyed now and over the next 15-20 years, perhaps longer. This is a brilliant showing.

We started with a magnificent pair of 1999s. This has always been one of my favorite Piedmont vintages, and the wines did not disappoint. The 1999 Barolo Cascina Francia opened with a beautiful, expressive bouquet that melded into a powerful, deep core of fruit. It was a superb Barolo, so much so that the next day I bought another case!
