The 1999 Barolo Cascina Francia is fascinating to taste next to the 2007, as it is clearly a wine from the Giovanni Conterno era. Heady and imposing, the 1999 is super classic all the way. Shades of iron, tobacco, incense, leather and orange peel add to its old-school feel. Even after all these years, the tannins remain quite formidable, as I imagine they always will.

Over the last few years the 1999 has continued to put on weight. Today, it is a much more extroverted and generous wine than it was at the outset. The 1999 can be enjoyed now and over the next 15-20 years, perhaps longer. This is a brilliant showing.

We started with a magnificent pair of 1999s. This has always been one of my favorite Piedmont vintages, and the wines did not disappoint. The 1999 Barolo Cascina Francia opened with a beautiful, expressive bouquet that melded into a powerful, deep core of fruit. It was a superb Barolo, so much so that the next day I bought another case!
About the producer
Giacomo Conterno is arguably Barolo’s most celebrated estate. While most famous for its Monfortino Riserva, the quality found in every bottling of Nebbiolo and Barbera at this address makes them a benchmark producer for both varieties.
