The 2017 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru wafts from the glass with aromas of cherries, black raspberries, woodsmoke, cloves and peonies, framed by a deft touch of toasty new oak. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, its satiny and expansive attack segues into an ample but muscular mid-palate, with refined but youthfully assertive tannins making their presence felt on the long, resonant finish. From a small parcel surrounded on three sides by Fourrier's holdings, this is a serious Griotte that will need time.

The 2017 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has more fruit intensity than the Mazis-Chambertin (though maybe not quite the same delineation), offering dark berries, sous-bois , and a hint of dried blood and game that surfaces with time. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, real vibrancy and delineation, marmalade-infused red berry fruit and a peppery aftertaste. It does not quite reach the level I expected from barrel, but remains a great Griottes.

The 2017 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru (yes, they use the plural at Roty) has a very refined and sophisticated bouquet with ample redcurrant, raspberry and subtle vanilla aromas. There is something "gentle" and "leisurely" about the aromas that waft from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a gorgeous entry: macerated black cherries, griottes (aptly), hints of fig and vanilla. This is silky smooth with wondrous depth and sensuality on the finish. Stunning. Serious.

Very subtle wood surrounds the more elegant and higher-toned aromas of red cherry, pomegranate, spice and a floral whiff. Somewhat surprisingly, the middle weight flavors possess both more volume and refinement while displaying a bit less power on the driving, detailed and complex finish that also betrays a hint of warmth. This is a powerful yet elegant Griotte that is a combination of power and finesse.
