Tasting notes
The 2021 Barbera d'Alba marries juicy dark fruit with quite a bit of supporting structure. Black cherry, gravel, menthol, licorice, spice and mocha build nicely. The 2021 is deep and mysterious, but also a bit rustic in its contours, with less finesse than is typical of the estate Barbera here. Many years ago Baldo Cappellano asked me not to score his wines, so all Cappellano wines show up on our database as NR.
More reviews and scores
The 2021 Barbera d'Alba Gabutti is a powerhouse. Deep, dark and quite brooding, the 2021 is seriously impressive. Black cherry, plum, menthol, licorice, chocolate, new leather and dried herbs are all amplified to the maximum in this decidedly potent, explosive Barbera from Cappellano. This is certainly not a shy wine. Many years ago Baldo Cappellano asked me not to score his wines, so all Cappellano wines show up on our database as NR.
About the producer

Serralunga d’Alba’s Cappellano is one of Barolo’s most legendary producers, producing ultra-traditional styles of Nebbiolo. Made famous by Teobaldo and now in the hands of his son Augusto, the estate is best known for its Barolo Piè Franco, a wine from ungrafted vines in the Gabutti Cru.
