The 2016 Barbaresco Ovello is fabulous. Bright, punchy and tightly wound, as young Ovello Barbarescos are, the 2016 packs a ton of punch. Crushed rocks, mint, white pepper, sweet red berry fruit and anise reveal themselves with a bit of aeration. The purity of the fruit, searing tannins and translucent energy are what young Ovello is all about. This taut, nervous Barbaresco is classic Ovello and classic Cantina del Pino.

Barbaresco. Tasted blind. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Great purity of ripe cherry fruit on the nose. Juicy acidity and gripping, grainy tannins becoming more powdery on the finish that shows plenty of compact fruit. Still very youthful and unsettled, but with very good balance. (WS)
The estate's benchmark wine, the 2016 Barbaresco Ovello reveals a pretty, open-knit personality with beautifully concentrated fruit. Dark cherry, blackberry and plum is framed by tar, campfire ash and powdered licorice. The Ovello cru opens onto a large panorama of vines and a sudden drop down to the Tanaro River. These vines at Cantina del Pino enjoy wide open spaces and slightly milder temperatures as a result. These conditions give the wine an open and generous approach. A mere 6,000 bottles were made.
