Tasting notes
Smoke, tobacco and wild herbs are some of the notes found in the 1971 Dom Ruinart. Another rich, powerful Champagne, the 1971 still has plenty of depth, if not quite the finesse of the Rosé.

As in 1970, early growth was very strong. However, the rest of the growth cycle bore no resemblance to the past year, with significant spring frosts and heavy damage from hailstorms in late May. Weather conditions were catastrophic during flowering, which caused poor set and shatter. July brought good weather, interrupted by hailstorms and wind that brought further damage to nearly 3,000 ha during the summer. Fortunately, the vendanges began on September 18th under excellent weather conditions that brought an immediate end to a late botrytis attack and rescued a precarious year. Harvest: Baumé 10°9 GL – Total acidity 8.8 g/l H2SO4 – S/A 20.7 Chardonnay: Baumé 10°8 GL – Total acidity 8.7 g/l H2SO4 Yield: 5,085 kg/ha Assemblage: 100% Chardonnay Grand Cru, exclusively from the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims. Mid copper. Not much nose, just light toast. Reminiscent of an old Eden Valley Riesling rather on the nose! Flattering density, a little bit sweet but lots of punch. I find this quite similar to the 1973 in its solid sweetness. Sweet and a little bit beery. But a nice drink! Very persistent. (JR)
