Score 90/100 · Drink 2014-2023, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Mar 2014

The 2003 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico takes over all the senses with its rich voluptuous fruit and powerful structure. Firm tannins provide the backbone for this huge, intense wine. Sweet floral and tobacco notes add an element of delicacy but the richness and ripeness of the year are dominant. Tar, spices, licorice and chocolate are layered into the finish. This is a deceptively medium-bodied wine, but there is plenty of power and structure that is waiting to emerge.

The 2003 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a wine that aptly honors the legacy of its maker. The vintage was super hot, but careful cluster selection before appassimento means you never feel that extra warmth. In fact, this wine is exceptionally balanced and polished. It lasts many long minutes thanks to enduring notes of polished stone, candied berry, balsam spice and medicinal herb. They enlighten the palate like the golden streak of a comet on a midnight sky. Drink 2014-2028. In the years leading up to "Bepi" Quintarelli's death in 2012 from Parkinson-s disease, there was a lot of confusion over who was managing affairs at the winery. Understandably, getting samples was difficult and visitor requests often went unanswered. Giuseppe Quintarelli had been sick for a long time and his survivors include four daughters and a slew of grandchildren. More than a year after his death, it seems a new chapter has commenced. The winery has a new United States importer (Kermit Lynch) and Quintarelli's heirs Francesco and Lorenzo (both grandsons) with Giampaolo (son-in-law) are communicative and excellent professionals. I hope the Quintarelli star will continue to rise. I have reviewed the 2003 Amarone Classico here. The 2004 will be released in early 2014. Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, www.kermitlynch.com
