Drink 0-0, Neal Martin, Oct 2025

The 2021 Volnay Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot 1er Cru is slightly deeper in colour. It has a feral, oaky, unappealing nose that comes across as ham-fisted compared to its peers. The palate is barely drinkable with a roasted, charred element and dry austere tannins. Unsure exactly how representative this bottle is; therefore, I will defer scoring it. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Volnay Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot 1er Cru has quite an airy bouquet, harmonious and demonstrating more concentration than the Clos des Chênes. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh entry, orange zest and marmalade infusing the red fruit, quite linear with a tensile finish that lingers in the mouth. Very fine.

Bouchard produced only four barrels of the 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot from fully three hectares, an especially derisory yield (equivalent to around five hectoliters per hectare), even in the context of the vintage, but the resulting wine is very good. Exhibiting notes of plums, dark berries, orange zest, peonies and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and rich, with unusual concentration and a rather reserved, serious profile.
