The 2019 Beaune du Chateau 1er Cru is clear in color. Pretty, light brambly red fruit and damp loam notes frame a well-defined, though not powerful, bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins and fresh acidity; it's a little angular with a brisk, slightly peppery finish. Fine. Tasted at the Bouchard Père tasting in London.

A blend of four premiers crus (Aigrots, Tuvilains, Sizies and Sur les Grèves) covering 10 ha of estate vineyards. A wine they have been making since 1907. Kept separate until bottling. 9–10 months in French oak, with up to 15% new. pH 3.29 g/l, TA 5.7 g/l (expressed as tartaric). First impression is creamy, mealy oak but it's not excessive or over-dominant. Excellent freshness with pure, creamy citrus on the palate, white blossom, lime leaf, suggests winemaker Frédéric Weber, and he's right. Great acid backbone and concentration. Long and delicious and with good potential. Attractive friction-like texture on the finish.  (JH)

An excellent introduction to the red wines of Beaune, this has full red-fruit and earthy character with hints of spicy oak and licorice. A crowd-pleasing balance of generosity and moderately dry tannins on the palate with good length. Should age well. Drink or hold.

Attractive sliced cooked apple with vanilla and light toast aromas follow through to a medium body with firmness and freshness. Bright and flavorful. Drink now.
