Tasting notes
The Il Carnasciale 2019 Carnasciale (made from 100% Caberlot, a clone with characteristics of Cabernet Franc and Merlot) reveals an elegant and fine personality, and the wine carries its extra concentration with grace. This vintage specifically has the benefit of pretty mineral notes that appear here and not in the hotter 2020 and 2021 vintages to the same effect. The fruit maturity is spot-on, with blackberry and blackcurrant, and the oak tones play a supporting role. The acidity works nicely. In 2019, the estate started to experiment with bigger oak vessels, and there are some second-use barriques handed down from the Il Caberlot.

The 2019 Carnasciale is quite delicate and gracious in this vintage. That makes it a fine choice for drinking now. Sweet floral accents meld into red cherry/plum fruit, mint, pomegranate and sweet spice. The 2019 is bright and energetic, with perhaps less opulence than some recent editions, but fine overall balance.
