Tasting notes
Vinfolio, Oct 2023

Wow – such a powerful nose with incredible concentration of dark fruit and almost impenetrable minerality. The palate similarly has tremendous impact – with a core of black cherry, cassis and bramble fruit, coated in liquorice and set among as yet very firm but fine-grained, spicy/peppery tannins. It is so young still, of course, and will need several years to come around, but the potential is undeniable. Neither the 2016 or 2017 vintages were made of the red, so it will be a while before we see another release of this rare cult wine.

Their best and oldest (40+ years) plots of Aragonez and Trincadeira. Fermented in big (12,000-litre) oak vats and aged 18 months in 3,000–5,000 litre French oak casks. TA 5.4 g/l, pH 3.8. Mid to deep crimson. Vibrant with ripe, spicy dark berries, with a note of damson sweetness. Big and rich, thickly textured tannins, and mouth-filling, with just enough freshness to balance thanks to a bite on the finish. Starting to smooth out but still with a long life ahead. (JH)
