FINE+RARE, Mar 2022

It’s not every day that one gets to taste six vintages of Montrachet. Arguably the finest white wine vineyard in the world, this Grand Cru produces exceptional Chardonnay. Nicolas Potel – one of Burgundy’s most connected winegrowers – has compiled an extremely limited-edition vertical Collection Case from the site. There are as few as 60 bottles made of some vintages included. Spanning 2014 to 2019, this is a golden era for Burgundy, starting with the exceptional 2014 (now just opening up, with taut vibrancy but creamy lactic notes and honeyed layers alongside candied lemon rind). The 2015 is rounder with hazelnut and toast, yet a crunchy peach and melon character, while the 2016 offers chamomile and fleshy white fruit. The 2017 is an undeniable star – showing the precision of the year, with pithy, mineral freshness, yet a sweetness of fruit that will need time to reveal itself fully. The final pair are 2018 and 2019 – the former powerful and broad with supple white peach and gala melon fruit, the latter combining acacia honey with the year’s combination of ripeness and freshness. Each one shows the power and concentration one expects of this vineyard, explored through the lens of six superb vintages.
