Score 99/100 · Drink 2027-2050, Jeb Dunnuck, Sep 2022

The star of the show in 2020, the 2020 Chambertin Clos-De-Beze Grand Cru is one of those ripe, intense, yet also incredibly pure and flawlessly balanced wines that can be difficult to describe. Giving up classic Burgundian red and black fruits as well as that reductive gunflint and chalky mineral streak, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a multi-dimensional, layered mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. Where most of Bernstein's 2020 are young and slightly unevolved, this has a very complete, already complex style that's just a joy to drink. Nevertheless, smart money will hide these in the cellar for 5-7 years. It will evolve for 20+ years.

The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes across as much too oaky on the nose. The fruit and terroir don’t get a look in past the cooperage. The palate is quite solid and structured, the new oak dominating the entry with the red fruit finally surfacing towards what feels like a harmonious finish, though one can feel the wood tannins lacquer the mouth on the aftertaste.
