Tasting notes
Former Chivas Brothers Master Blender Colin Scott came out of retirement to blend this special 50-year-old Scotch. It is the first in-house creation from the Sazerac-owned remarkable spirits curators. Scott had his pick of the Last Drop’s remarkable maturing malt and grain inventory of ex-Sherry and ex-Bourbon casks. It is unexpectantly vibrant for its significant age, bursting with peach, maraschino cherry and green banana lifted further by fragrant magnolia and lemon peel. The complexity comes in waves, indicating the exceptional expressiveness: luscious apple strudel, along with honeycomb, blackcurrant jam, and hints of an oaky toastiness, too. Incredibly creamy and immediately mouth-filling, with a gentle pepper heat and whisper of smoke building an extraordinary complexity from the fruit-forward nose. Liquorice, green tea, toffee and toasted marshmallows, along with a rich leather rancio note, keep building over time. The finish is incredibly long with more of that gentle warmth, rounded off with sweet cinnamon spice and a lingering raisin fruitiness.

Honey, vanilla, popcorn, ice cream cone, seasoned light oak, freshly baked cookies, ground hazelnut, and an array of dry spices, from nutmeg, pepper, and cinnamon to star anise and a hint of clove. A smooth and silky texture with honey, toasted almond, sweet vanilla, cinnamon, and pepper spiciness, it’s packed with sweet grain notes, hazelnut cookies, sugar cones, vanilla, and drying oak carrying through to the finish. (203 bottles)
Would you have gambled The Last Drop 1960 liquid in new sherry wood for four more years? The indulgent nose proffers maple syrup, buckwheat honey, roasted spices, blue grapes, pomegranate, raspberry compote, cilantro, pandan leaf, and beefsteak juices soaking into mushroom gills. The complex, lustrous mouthfeel is replete with a sheen of rich maltiness, molasses lashed by sherry before a dry, resinous finish. Water brings an oily nuttiness, then further drops produce a silky, clingy texture. Glorious. Miraculous. Victorious. (388 bottles only)
TLD's sixth release captivates with dark caramel, Brazil nut, polished oak, cacao, scorched earth, grilled field mushroom, and roasted coffee bean aromas. To sip is to submit to a discombobulating whirl of cherry and jellied black fruits replete with old sherry characteristics, replaced by an unctuous, oily base, torn asunder by seething spices of clove, pepper, and star anise. Ever-changing. Muted exit of dulled spice, browning apple, and eucalyptus. (898 bottles)
