The 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has plenty of ripe red cherry and crushed strawberry scents on the nose, although there is initially a slight flatness that gradually recedes, gaining more and more harmony and refinement with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and it ends on a high note by way of its purity and elegance. Fingers crossed that the nose is just in a dumb phase, because the palate has so much more to offer. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Cask sample. Lightish cherry red. Peppery and sweet red fruit. Delicately floral too and nicely dusty. Cool, fine-boned, mouth-watering, all elegance rather than power in its length. Really very delicate. Great purity but you have to pay attention as it won’t overwhelm you unless you yield to it. (JH)
The 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a more open bouquet compared to the preceding Charmes-Chambertin, unfolding with black cherries, cassis and iodine aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. This is a voluminous Clos de la Roche that seems to fill the mouth, yet it batons down the hatches on the saline finish, confirming that it deserves several years in bottle. Like other producers with both Grand Crus, I feel the Clos Saint-Denis has its nose just out in front.
