Drink 2013, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2006

Medium red. The Pie Franco, from ungrafted vines, displays a deeply mentholated, balsamic nose and beautiful notes of ethereal fruit that blossom onto the palate with much persistence in a style that is at once delicate and authoritative. Though medium bodied, it is also packed with notable structure and should drink well to age 30. Cappellano's Pie Franco is one Piedmont's most unique, quirky expressions of Barolo and the 1999 is a great effort from this producer. With a tiny production of just 3,000 bottles, it also one of the region's rarest wines, but well worth the effort of finding and cellaring.

Cappellano

Serralunga d’Alba’s Cappellano is one of Barolo’s most legendary producers, producing ultra-traditional styles of Nebbiolo. Made famous by Teobaldo and now in the hands of his son Augusto, the estate is best known for its Barolo Piè Franco, a wine from ungrafted vines in the Gabutti Cru.
