Pale yellow-green. Pungent scents of white peach, powdered stone and five-spice powder. Sharply delineated and tightly wound, conveying powerful cut and almost painful minerality. The wine's lemon, lime and crushed rock flavors are joined by strong salinity on the extremely long, youthfully clenched finish. Don't even think about pulling the cork for at least five years.

There's one barrel of the 2016 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, and while it doesn't have the depth or completeness of the Bâtard, it's also very impressive. Exhibiting aromas of preserved lemon, vanilla pod, brioche and toasty oak, it's concentrated and vertical, but it will need a bit of time to come together. It's too soon to say whether the Bâtard or Chevalier will have the edge in the end.

One large barrel. Barrel sample. Nutty, almost sweet, creamy nose. Much less smoky than the Bâtard. More restrained on the nose. Lighter and more delicate than the Corton, the minerality more to the fore and the fruit less immediate but it has wonderful, understated intensity, plus restraint and utter purity. Totally mouth-watering and just slightly salty on the long finish with a hint of oak spice coming in on the finish. A wine to make you thirsty. Unadulterated purity. (JH)
