Drink 2025-2060, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2020

Cappellano’s 2010 Barolo Otin Fiorin Piè Franco is an epic, legendary wine. My notes say “to die for.” That pretty much sums it up. Silky, floral and translucent, the 2010 captivates all the senses with its extraordinary beauty. This Barolo is rarely this elegant, this refined. On this night it is utterly breathtaking. The sort of wine that halts conversation.

The 2010 Barolo Otin Fiorin Piè Franco is just as impressive as it always has been. A powerful, austere Barolo, the 2010 exudes classicism in all of its elements. It is also an especially virile wine at this early stage. In a word: magnificent. Readers should not plan on opening the 2010 anytime soon. Still, it is always a privilege to get a glimpse of this epic wine in its adolescence.

Cappellano’s 2010 Barolo Otin Fiorin Piè Franco is eternal in its beauty. Impossibly fine tannins caress the palate as the 2010 captivates all the senses. The 2010 has no real beginning and no end; rather is a wine of almost impossible profoundness. Rose petal, mint, cinnamon, hard candy and red stone fruits are woven together in a fabric of incredible sweetness, perfume and silkiness. The flavors are a bit brighter and more lifted than they are in the Rupestris. Readers who can find the Piè Franco should not hesitate, as it is clearly one of the wines of this great vintage.

Serralunga d’Alba’s Cappellano is one of Barolo’s most legendary producers, producing ultra-traditional styles of Nebbiolo. Made famous by Teobaldo and now in the hands of his son Augusto, the estate is best known for its Barolo Piè Franco, a wine from ungrafted vines in the Gabutti Cru.
