Score 92/100 · Drink 2025-2045, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jul 2016

The 2005 Barolo Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera is one of the most searingly tannic, austere wines of the vintage. Bright, incisive and tightly wound, the 2005 is going to need another decade or so to soften, even then I am not sure it will be an especially pleasurable wine, as the spiking acidity and intense tannins both are overpowering. Readers who want to understand what old-school Barolo is all about should check out the 2005, a wine that serves as a poignant reminder as to how much things have changed over the last decade. Revisited after twelve hours, the 2005 has become civilized, as the fruit fills out the frame to balance the tannins. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2005 or on opening it far in advance.

(these two 2005s were bottled in March of 2009) Complex, slightly exotic aromas of nearly roasted raspberry, mocha, marzipan, truffle and earth. Very sweet and densely packed but currently tighter and leaner in the mouth than the 2006, no doubt a function of the March bottling. Plenty of power and cut to the flavors of raspberry and tobacco. Finishes with excellent persistence, but the wine's youthfully tough, toothcoating tannins are going to require a good eight to ten years of cellaring.

The 2005 Barolo Cannubi S. Lorenzo/Ravera is a surprisingly, open, accessible Barolo from Giuseppe Rinaldi. Dried cherries, tobacco, spices and flowers come together in a round, sensual style. The wine reveals outstanding length and dusty tannins on the finish.

Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. These 2005s from Giuseppe Rinaldi are pretty, mid-weight offerings. Some of the complexity and sheer explosiveness of his best vintages is missing, but in exchange the wines should drink well relatively early. Importer: Vinifera Imports, Ronkonkoma, NY; tel.
