Score 92-95/100 · Drink 2007-2014, Pierre Rovani, Jun 2003

Grapes from Fonteny, Corbeaux, and Perrieres (averaging 56-years old) were combined to fashion the 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru. Its spicy, licorice-laced black cherry aromas lead to a massive, medium to full-bodied character. Tar, loads of black fruits, spices, and cassis liqueur can be discerned in its powerful, firmly structured character. Its stout, dense, boisterous personality has a solid, tannic backbone. Drink it between 2007 and 2014. No offense to Peter Weygandt, this estate’s importer, but can anyone think of an easier job than having to sell Bernard Dugat’s wines? For the past decade, this 7.5 hectare (18.53 acre) domaine has consistently produced exceptional wines, a testimony to the relentless pursuit of quality exhibited by Dugat, his wife, and children. “Yes, it’s true that we live in the vineyards, working from morning to night, but the primary reasons we don’t have the same problems as many others in Burgundy is that we concentrate on having low yields and are fortunate enough to have old vines,” sais Bernard Dugat. Importer: Weygandt-Metzler, Peter Weygandt, Unionville, PA; tel. (610) 486-0800

(from 50+-year-old vines in Fontenys, Corbeaux and Perrieres) Deep medium ruby. Sexy aromas of wild dark berries, dark chocolate, roast coffee and smoky oak. Sweet, lush and fine, with higher-pitched, sharply focused flavors of black cherry and minerals and firm framing acids. Finishes with fine tannins and persistent flavors of cassis and blackberry. Dugat emphasized that the yield here of just 28 hectoliters per hectare reflected what the vines produced; it did not result from saignee or from the elimination of inferior fruit.
