Dry vintage, dry summer. At the time he had an old press that broke the fruit, which was fine when the fruit was good. But in this vintage the guy working in the cellar pressed a little too hard so it is a little rough at the end of the taste, said Mitjavile. This had 70% new oak. Deep browning garnet. Scented, perfumed undergrowth. Lavender seduction and a touch of mint then spice emerges with time. Leathery sweetness, so delicate. Such sweet fruit. Opens up to be so seductive. Multi-layered, incredibly long and enchanting but it did start to dry out after two hours in the glass so best to drink soon after pouring. (JH)

The 1995 offers up a tell-tale Merlot nose of smoky, roasted coffee, sweet chocolate, mocha, and berry scents. Amazingly deep and rich, this is among the finest wines I have ever tasted from the Cotes de Bourg. There is low acidity, good fat, glycerin, and extract, and a layered, chunky, fleshy finish. It should drink well for 7-8 years. The undisputed qualitative leader in the Cotes de Bourg appellation, Roc de Cambes has fashioned impressive efforts in both 1995 and 1996.

1995 Roc de Cambes (a blend of 60% merlot, 25% cabernet sauvignon, 10% cabernet franc and 5% malbec) : Ruby-blue color! Even riper aromas of animal fur, fresh blood, dark berries and white pepper; quite syrah- like. Sweet and succulent in the mouth, with dense, intensely flavored black fruit. Very long finish, with tougher tannins than the Tertre- Rôteboeuf. This is more dominated by its structure today than the above, which is more pliant on the back end. May be the best Roc de Cambes to date.
