The contrast between this and the preceding 1998 was mountain top and abandoned mine shaft. The fruit on this sings and sings. It tastes of blood and blackcurrant, plum and iron, rust and road and rain. Glorious. A wine that seems to marvel in its own phrases, the tannins punctuating the cursive flow of fruit with insouciant restraint, leaning almost into indulgence, but not quite. Exquisitely proportioned. Neil Beckett described this wine as 'almost like the ocean at night' and I wanted to kiss him, right there! Yes, just like an ocean at night. Breathtaking. (TC)
